
It is now host to the South Carolina Opera Company and Asheville Lyric Opera. The exterior restoration and window replacement were completed in 1994. The City of Newberry vacated the building in 1992. In 1970 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Newberry Historical Society in 1969 promoted the preservation of the Opera House, as did several other community groups. By 1959, there was talk about tearing it down, but a public outcry stopped the wrecking ball. In 1952 with the showing of “The Outlaw”, the Opera House was closed as a movie theater.

Slowly, movies replaced the big stage shows, and in the 1920’s the Opera House was remodeled as a movie theater. A “Thomas Edison Talkie” was presented in the late teens. Silent “moving pictures” were shown at the Opera House in the early-1900’s. Norman, architect from Columbia, S.C., designed the French Gothic inspired structure. I did, however, set up two of our wireless mics on each side of the stage in order to accommodate the singing and announcements that were to be in the jazz portion of the second half of the show.The Newberry Opera House was completed in 1881 at a cost of $30,000. Acoustically, it doesn't take much sound reinforcement to get a very good, even, and balanced sound and sometimes the best decision to make in order to have good sound is to have no sound reinforcement at all. The Newberry Opera House hosts dozens of performances each year from musicals and operas, to rock concerts and beach tunes. From the lip of our stage to the back wall of hall is 75 feet. In 1996, the town undertook an extensive renovation of the building that added 10,000 square feet of space and transformed it, once again, into a state-of-the-art performance facility. Of course not using any instrument micing, from a technical standpoint, makes for a very easy work day. For their audio I decided that, with some discussion with the performers, in order to keep in line with classical tradition I wasn't going to mic the ensemble.

We get them from time to time here, but sometimes it just feels like they are few and far between.

I have to admit that it was a such a nice change of pace to see a very good string quartet.
